My first promotional gig was as a business to business canvasser for a Staples campaign in my hometown of San Antonio in 2008. I did a variety of gigs over the years in San Antonio over the following years, but my working focus was more in food service and customer service. When I moved to the Houston area in 2012, promotions and marketing became the bulk of my income, especially when I started school in 2015. I have done a variety of things to include: brand ambassador for many different entities in an array of settings, such as working as a customer retention specialist for a Dick's Sporting Goods grand opening; representing companies at trade shows and conventions, engaging attendees, answering questions, collecting demographic information and feedback; product demonstrator in grocery stores offering shoppers samples and educating them about the product; lead check-in, for an events company - act as the lead for pub crawls done around/on holidays by distributing flyers the week(s) prior, then checking in participants for the pub crawls; mascot and handler, in grocery stores and at events, I have been both the mascot (the person in the costume) and the handler (the person engaging with the public leading the costumed); PR helper - at a business convention, staff the table, pass out promotional materials, take pictures, interact via games and giveaways; political canvasser - slightly different than marketing but the same concept applies, canvass neighborhoods going door to door to ask for political support for a local candidate; brand ambassador / dedicated rep- for an organic chocolate company, independently work on a 3 month enterprise to spread awareness of the product, schedule with store managers, attend store functions, increase sales, develop additional product placement; webinar host / writer and researcher - for a marketing company looking for an American perspective, research their specific product and its competitive counterparts, write articles, blogs, and create presentations with this information and then act as a webinar host and promotional video spokesperson. The majority of these gigs have been very short term, sometimes repeating with a few going as long as 6 months. The money is good, it works with my school schedule, I love the variety, and it gives me an abundance of opportunities to meet, engage with, and learn from the spectrum of amazing people I encounter.
There have been promotional and marketing experiences with a sales component, such as goals for numbers of products sold, numbers of individuals educated on the product or service, and emphasis on driving sales and increasing product and service purchase and utilization. I have always met and exceeded the goals issued. In promotions and marketing, I see sales as educating potential customers and creating interest and awareness which ultimately leads to increases in numbers. To be fair and honest, I do not seek sales focused or commission based opportunities.
Family first, always - thankfully we're a diverse, lively, fun loving bunch. I am a lifelong learner and love to do so constantly, whether it's at school where I am working on bachelor's or just from a stranger, there is always something new to learn somewhere. And swimming, I am an undercover mermaid and practice my human skills at every opportunity.
